The Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine offers a one-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship program in Hematopathology. This program is designed to provide training in all aspects of hematopathology including evaluation of bone marrow, peripheral blood, lymph node, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular genetics, hemoglobinopathy and coagulation. Hematopathology fellows gain experience in a broad spectrum of adult and pediatric hematopathology service at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) and the Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO) on the Anschutz Medical Campus.
Our program is to train independent hematopathologists to acquire state-of-the-art diagnostic skills and clinical research knowledge. The fellow is expected to participate actively in the integrative aspects of clinical hematopathology to gain competency, proficiency and diagnostic excellence in the practice of hematopathology. The fellow will have in-depth learning opportunities through hands-on training in gating and analyzing raw flow cytometry immunophenotyping data, and interpretation of advanced ancillary studies including comprehensive next-generation sequencing in myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms. The annual clinical case volume consists of approximately 3,500 bone marrow specimens, 3,000 peripheral blood smears and body fluids, 2,500 lymphoma work-up cases, 5,000 flow cytometric assays, 7,000 molecular diagnostic cases, and 15,000 cytogenetics/FISH assays including cancer testing, stem cell testing, chromosomal SNP microarray, and tissue culture & cryopreservation.
