Getting Older is NOT for the Weak: Geriatric Rehabilitation for the 21st Century. Presented by: Daniel Malone, PT, PhD, CCS and Jennifer Stevens-Lapsley, PT, PhD
Functional deficits acquired during hospitalization are often referred to as “hospital-associated deconditioning” (HAD) and rehabilitation professionals play a major role in prevention and recovery from HAD. This course will present an evidenced
based approach for the implementation of a high intensity progressive rehabilitation program. The focus of this approach is less on general conditioning and more on specific, targeted exercise training to improve strength, functional mobility and performance
of activities of daily living. This approach, termed “iSTRONGER”, can be implemented by all rehabilitation professionals (PT & PTA; OT & COTA) in all settings from hospital to home.

Functional deficits acquired during hospitalization are often referred to as “hospital-associated deconditioning” (HAD) and rehabilitation professionals play a major role in prevention and recovery from HAD leading to the restoration
of functional independence. This course will present an evidenced based approach for the implementation of a high intensity progressive rehabilitation that focuses less on general conditioning and more on specific, targeted exercise training
to improve strength, functional mobility and performance of activities of daily living. This approach, termed iSTRONGER”, can be implemented by all rehabilitation professionals (PT & PTA; OT & COTA) in all settings from hospital
to home. | By the end of this course, the attendee will: • Understand changes in the health care environment that will impact the rehabilitation of the older adult across the continuum of care from hospital to home • Apply principles
of continuous screening to determine safe patient participation in high-intensity rehabilitation. • Understand the physiological principles that form the basis of high intensity rehabilitation • Integrate concepts and
skills of high-intensity rehabilitation into your practice for the care of older adults. • Synthesize concepts and skills of high-intensity rehabilitation to transition patients to the next level of care. | Lecture Case Studies Large Group Problem Solving & Discussions Question & Answer | This course qualifies for 8 Colorado Category 1 Continuing Competency Points under the Colorado Physical Therapy Board Standards for Continuing Education Activities. |
Target Audience
Future and Current Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Future and Current Occupational Therapists and Certified Occupational Therapist Assistants in all settings from hospital to home.
Instructional level
Beginner Instructional Level - This level assumes that the participants have a general familiarity with physical therapy practice, so it provides foundational understanding and application.
Requirements for successful completion
Completion of this full course, an in-class quiz, and the post-course evaluation are required to receive continuing education credits.
Prerequisites or recommended preparation
None recommended/required
Teleconferencing
While physical attendance is recommended to facilitate group discussions, teleconferencing is available for those unable to attend in person.
SPEAKERS
Daniel Malone PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Physical Therapy Program at the University
of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. A practicing clinician for over 26 years, Dr. Malone is a board certified specialist in Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy and is the past president of Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section of the American
Physical Therapy Association. He earned a Master of Physical Therapy from Temple University in 1992 and a Ph.D. in physiology from the School of Medicine at Temple University in 2008. The goal of Dr. Malone’s scholarship is to advance education,
clinical practice and research related to the physical therapist’s management of patient’s with complex medical conditions ranging from the intensive care unit to the post-acute care setting to home.
Dr. Stevens-Lapsley is a Professor and Director of the Rehabilitation Science PhD Program in the Physical Therapy
Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center. She earned her degree in physical therapy and a PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science with a focus in Applied Physiology, at the University of Delaware. She then completed post-doctoral
training at the University of Florida. Her research is focused on identifying, integrating and advancing innovative evidence-based medicine solutions for older adult rehabilitation through highly effective research methods and partnerships. Her research
ranges from understanding the mechanisms of skeletal muscle dysfunction to studies of implementation of best rehabilitation practices in post-acute care settings. Her clinical research has resulted in 100+ publications, national and international
speaking invitations, and awards such as the Marian Williams Award from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA).
