Student Training and Research Opportunities
The eXtraOrdinarY Kids Program welcomes many student types including undergraduate, graduate, medical, pharmacy, public health, and genetic counseling students interested in gaining experience in pediatric clinical research, with a focus on sex chromosome aneuploidies and related conditions. We offer structured opportunities through both institutional work-study programs and independent study or course credit arrangements at students’ home institutions.
Program Overview: Students who join our team are integrated into an active, interdisciplinary clinical-translational research environment. Our work spans observational studies, clinical trials, survey research, qualitative methods, and translational science. Students have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects while developing skills in research design, data collection, data management, analysis, and scientific communication. We balance in-person, remote, and asynchronous work to meet the needs and goals of our team and of the students. Students work on average 15 hours per week with our team, ranging between 10 and 25 hours per week.
Types of Opportunities
Work-Study Positions:Available to students in the University of Colorado system (CU Denver, CU Boulder, CU Anschutz, UC Colorado Springs) who have approved support to participate in work-study programs. To understand if you are eligible for a work study position, please first contact the financial aid or student employment office on your campus before inquiring about work-study.
Independent Study / Course Credit:Students may work with our team to fulfill academic credit requirements through their home institution. These experiences are often tailored to align with course objectives and may include a defined project or scholarly deliverable. Students take on average 3 credits of independent research but have varied from 1-4 credits in the past. We have worked with students in the past from CU Denver, CU Anschutz, Regis University, University of Denver, and Touro University.
Externships:We have hosted multiple externs from Masters programs at Regis University in the past for a 100-hour clinical research immersion.
Student Responsibilities May Include
Supporting data collection, entry, and quality control in our registry studies or longitudinal studies
Assisting with literature reviews and evidence synthesis
Contributing to data collection and REDCap database management
Participating in team meetings and research discussions
Assisting with manuscript preparation, abstracts, and presentations
Shadowing in clinical research visits or clinical days
Consenting patients into studies or performing specific participant-facing roles
Eligibility
Undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing
Demonstrated interest in healthcare, public health, research, or related fields
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and collaboratively
Time Commitment and Structure: Time commitment varies based on the student’s program requirements and project needs. Work-study positions typically follow institutional guidelines, while independent study arrangements are coordinated with faculty mentors and academic advisors. Students usually work between 10 and 25 hours per week.
