Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship

This one-year fellowship is designed to give trainees a comprehensive molecular pathology experience. Fellows will rotate through the Colorado Molecular Correlates Laboratory (CMOCO) and the Precision Diagnostics Laboratory at Children's Hospital Colorado (CHCO). These laboratories see more than 7,000 clinical cases per year in solid tumor molecular oncology, molecular hematopathology, and inherited disease.

Fellow time will focus on designing, interpreting, and reporting molecular diagnostic testing. Additional time spent at the Colorado Center for Personalized Medicine (CCPM) Biobank will expose the fellow to high-throughput, large-scale genomic analysis of approximately 1,000 specimens per week. This testing is used for pharmacogenomics, ACMG secondary findings, carrier screening, and genetic risk alleles, such as HFE and FVL.

Fellows will also be exposed to mitochondrial and biochemical genetics testing and molecular microbiology at CHCO, cytogenetics at the Colorado Genetics Laboratory (CGL), and outpatient genetics clinics at the University of Colorado Hospital and CHCO. Additional elective opportunities are available depending on the fellow's areas of interest.

Fellow education is heavily based on one-on-one teaching during daily sign-out and rotations with six MGP-boarded pathologists, three ACGME-certified molecular geneticists, and additional clinical, technical, and scientific faculty and staff.

The curriculum includes didactics and opportunities for practical laboratory experience, depending on the fellow's level of training. The fellow will also audit the Clinical Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics course for genetic counseling students and Laboratory Genetics and Genomics fellows.

Additional activities include active fellow involvement in weekly laboratory management meetings, bimonthly journal clubs, and the Biobank Incidental Findings Committee. Fellows are also expected to participate in the validation of at least one clinical test during the year.

Requirements

All required clinical education for entry into an ACGME-accredited fellowship program must be completed in one of the following:

  • An ACGME-accredited residency program
  • An AOA-approved residency program
  • A program with ACGME International Advanced Specialty Accreditation
  • A Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada-accredited residency program
  • A College of Family Physicians of Canada-accredited residency program located in Canada

Applicants must complete and pass the required USMLE Steps.

International medical graduates must also hold ECFMG certification.

Stipends

Stipends are commensurate with the level of postgraduate training.

How to Apply

The Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship uses FellowshipsCAS for fellowship applications. FellowshipsCAS provides a centralized, mobile-ready platform where applicants can submit required materials and monitor the progress of their application.

Applications for the 2028–2029 fellowship year opened on October 1, 2026, and will remain open through January 1, 2027.

NRMP Match Information

The Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) . Applicants are encouraged to review the NRMP website for registration deadlines, timelines, and Match requirements.
