Cytopathology Fellowship

We strongly believe that fellowship programs should be able to meet with all applicants they select for interviews and that applicants should be free to interview with all programs for which they are offered an interview. Participating in the NRMP Specialties Matching Service (SMS) Fellowship Match process allows this to happen.

This fellowship provides one year of advanced training in diagnostic cytopathology and the performance of fine needle aspirations of palpable lesions under the supervision of faculty who are board-certified in cytopathology. The fellow will perform fine needle aspirations and provide immediate interpretations for specimens with faculty supervision.

The cytopathology service has a high volume of non-gynecologic specimens, including fine needle aspiration specimens and core biopsies, many of which require rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE). Common sample types include ultrasound-guided endoscopy and bronchoscopy procedures, thyroid nodules, and image-guided samples collected in Interventional Radiology.

Fellows assume graduated responsibility throughout the year and participate in the education of pathology residents and medical students rotating through cytopathology. The fellow will also learn laboratory management and quality assurance principles and must complete a scholarly project during the program year.

Requirements

Preference will be given to candidates who are board-certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology in anatomic pathology or anatomic and clinical pathology.

Stipends: Commensurate with the level of training.

NRMP Match Information

The University of Colorado Cytopathology Fellowship participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) Specialties Matching Service® . Applicants who interview with the program must register for the Match and submit a rank order list through the NRMP to be eligible for appointment.

Important Dates for the 2028–2029 Fellowship Year

• Approximately October 1, 2026: Applications open and program review begins
• February 2027: Virtual interviews conducted
• April 14, 2027: Rank Order List Certification Deadline
• April 28, 2027: Match Day
• July 2028: Fellowship training begins

Applicants are encouraged to submit a complete application as early as possible to ensure full consideration during the review process. Following interviews, applicants and programs will submit rank order lists through the NRMP, with final fellowship placements determined on Match Day.
