Surgical Pathology - Gynecologic and Breast Pathology

The Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado offers a one-year fellowship program in Breast & Gynecological Pathology based at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) on the Anschutz Medical Campus. The program design provides a unique experience and offers broad exposure to breast, gynecological, and obstetric pathology. The UCH breast and gynecological multidisciplinary clinics see hundreds of complex patients every year that are discussed at weekly multidisciplinary conferences. Our University of Colorado Hospital is the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the state of Colorado, and one of only four in the entire Rocky Mountain Region. The current breast and/or gynecological surgical pathology faculty at UCH include Drs. Amber Berning, Jenna Bodmer, Linda Logan, Lauren McLemore, Sanjana Mehrotra, Sarah Mengshol, Miriam Post, Lynelle Smith, and Rebecca Wolsky. In addition, the fellowship has close ties with the departmental molecular lab, the Colorado Molecular Correlates Laboratory (CMOCO), Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO), and breast & gynecological oncologic clinics at UCH, with rotations available at each site on the Anschutz Campus.

Rotating through the breast & gynecological pathology services, the fellow will individually work-up cases in a self-directed manner. This will be closely followed with feedback and instruction obtained during the faculty's regular clinical practice workflow. The fellow will participate in a unique and required longitudinal experience examining the relationships between gynecological tumors and molecular results, in association with CMOCO. Elective time is available to complete research projects or rotate through other pathology sub-specialties, including at the Children’s Hospital Colorado. Over the course of their time in the fellowship program, the fellow will be encouraged to submit at least one abstract for national presentation. Teaching is an important part of the fellowship program, and the fellow will be involved in the education of medical students, residents, and our clinical colleagues.

In addition to the core clinical practice outlined above, the fellow will be integrated into the services’ ancillary clinical activities. The fellow will participate in the regular breast & gynecological multidisciplinary clinical conferences for UCH in which we provide consultant services. In addition, the fellow will have the ability to lead Breast & Gynecological Journal Club and participate in weekly interesting case and consultation conferences.
