The StARR program milestones have been developed to ensure the successful scientific career development of the resident-investigator, provide oversight to the research training process, integrate the research training activities into career development plans for each resident-investigator, document the progress and research achievements and facilitate the transition to subspecialty training in heart, lung and blood disorders.

In the first 4-6 months of the year preceding the StARR Program, prospective scholars will identify their proposed mentor and project that will ultimately be included in the application process.
Following acceptance into the program, StARR scholars will finalize their research plan and have it undergo review and approval by the Internal Advisory Committee before initiation of the research project.
The start-up phase of the research project will involve frequent interactions with the mentor, acquisition of specific research skills, and may require human use approval. It is expected that StARR scholars will meet with their mentor weekly as well have as quarterly meetings with the mentorship committee. Additionally, StARR scholars will create an Individual Training and Development Plan, attend weekly Research in Progress seminars and monthly Research Methods Conferences. In quarter three, StARR scholars will present at the Research in Progress seminar, and begin the preparation of their manuscript.
In the second year, StARR scholars will continue to refine their research project by continuing to meet weekly with their mentor as well as quarterly meetings with the mentorship committee. Scholars will attend weekly Research in Progress seminars and monthly Research Methods Conferences. In quarter three, StARR scholars will present at the Research in Progress seminar, and will refine their manuscript. The Individual Training and Development Plan will be revaluated, while specific leadership training and guidance on the Pre-K program will also be implemented.
