StARR Application Information
Applications must be received by November 1, 2024
The StARR program is designed to give residents the time, mentorship, and resources needed to do significant research during residency, making them better prepared to compete for a top academic fellowship after residency and have a successful career
as a physician scientist. StARR provides the opportunity to take 12–24 months of dedicated paid research time during residency.
Who should apply?
- Medicine, Medicine/Pediatrics, and Pediatrics Residents starting either PGY-2 or PGY-3
- Surgery Residents 6–12 months prior to their research training
What to consider?
- Residents accepted into the program will be extremely competitive for the top fellowships in the country upon completion
- The program will extend your residency, but will make your chance for success in fellowship greater
- Residents who are “off cycle” with a significant other and very interested in research will now have a mechanism to help them make excellent use of a year or two while waiting for training times to line up
- Residents who successfully apply to the program would maintain their continuity clinic during their research time but would delay other inpatient or elective responsibilities
- Research must fall under the heading “heart, lung, or blood” (this is the section of the NIH that supports this grant). However, flexibility is built into the program, with the ability to accommodate a variety of interests - bench,
translational or clinical research related to heart, lung and blood disorders.
Program Benefits
- StARR scholars are eligible for NIH Loan Repayment – up to $50,000 annually
- $20,000 available per each StARR scholar for research development, workshops, conferences and career development
