Story by Abigail Castro
Angela Delos Santos is a second-year student at the CU Physical Therapy Program. Angela's experience with rehabilitation after back surgery and time as a yoga instructor enlightened her about healing the body from the outside in. It was from these previous experiences that led her to explore what physical therapy entails and how this profession uses the knowledge of the human body to help others obtain their functional and recreational goals.
During her time at the CU PT program, Angela is grateful for the outstanding faculty that creates a safe and comforting environment. Angela says, “through and through, the faculty cares about us as a whole being, not just a student. They check in on our mental health, are adaptable with our needs, and conversate with us as colleagues… it has allowed me the ability to develop my professional goals and not be afraid to ask for their help to put action towards achieving such goals. I am excited to become a physical therapist and help others through their rehabilitation process by using the top-tier knowledge I have received with my education here at CU.”
When asked to reflect on her decision to pursue Pelvic Health PT, Angela shares, “a majority of my observation hours to get into PT school was working with a Pelvic Health PT. I had shadowed and worked closely as an aide under an array of physical therapists. But my passion for this profession did not ignite until I worked with a pelvic health PT and her patient caseload. From postpartum mothers to female athletes, it was incredible to witness the impact that this specialty provided them. Of course, the success of treatment differed among patients and their varying presentations. But for all, I sensed how important it was for them to have a healthcare provider to talk to about their more intimate and vulnerable issues – both in physical and emotional form. Cultivating such a safe and vulnerable space for these sorts of discussion as well as treating their physical ailments is truly what cemented my pursuit to specialize in pelvic health.” Moreover, Angela recently completed her pelvic health certification so she can begin treating patients of this specialty after she graduates in December. Angela says, “I hope to increase the awareness and accessibility of women’s health and overall pelvic health PT in all clinical settings.”
Angela shares words of encouragement with students interested in pursuing careers that focus on women’s health, “know your ‘why’ for wanting to begin this pursuit and let that “why” guide you. Reach out to women currently in the field who inspire you and ask them about their experiences. There is so much support to be given, you just have to find it and ask!”
