Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics

Background:

There are currently very few post-graduate education options available to Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) Providers (nurse practitioners or physician assistants) who want to train in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP). The APP DBP Fellowship at the University of Colorado is designed to prepare APPs to work in this specialty, either in primary care or specialty care settings.

Purpose:

The DBP-APP Fellowship program will provide the trainee with varied clinical and educational opportunities to prepare them for autonomous practice in the primary care or specialty setting. The fellow will be provided opportunities for the following during their fellowship:

  • Understand the complex developmental processes of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults, in the context of their families and communities.
  • Understand the biological, psychological, and social influences on development in the emotional, social, motor, language, and cognitive domains.
  • Understand the mechanisms for primary and secondary prevention of disorders in behavior and development.
  • Be able to identify and treat disorders of behavior and development throughout childhood and adolescence.

Fellowship Overview

One year Fellowship (12 months) starting in August of each year and running until July the following year

  • The goal of the program is to provide APPs with depth, breadth, volume, and intensity of didactic and clinical training to independently evaluate and care for children with developmental disabilities.
  • During the Fellowship, the APP will receive both didactic and clinical training with APPs, Physicians and other interdisciplinary trainees in Developmental Pediatrics and other relevant specialties.
  • The APP Fellowship Program is integrated with the ACGME Physician Fellowship program and Psychology Post Doctoral Program in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics at University of Colorado so that APP fellows will receive training and experiences alongside Physician Fellows, Psychologists, and other interdisciplinary trainees.
  • Opportunities for scholarship will be provided and individualized to the Fellow’s interest

Application process:

To Apply applicants must meet the following requirements as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant

For Nurses

  • Master's or Doctoral Degree in Nursing
  • National Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatrics or Family Practice
  • Active unrestricted Colorado RN and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse and Colorado RXN (prescriptive authority)

For Physician Assistants

  • Master's Degree as a Physician Assistant
  • National Board Certification as a Physician Assistant
  • Active Colorado Physician Assistant unrestricted license

All Applicants

  • Current active or eligibility to apply for a DEA registration
  • No Active Malpractice Claims
  • Three professional references
  • Narrative statement of interest in this specialty and goals for future professional growth

Application/Selection Timeline

  • Applications will be accepted from Sept 1 to Feb 1 of each year
  • Applicants will be notified by email if selected to schedule a virtual interview
  • The one Applicant who is selected for the fellowship will be notified by email around April 1.

Benefits:

The APP Fellow will be considered a full-time salaried faculty member at the University of Colorado with a 1 year contract during the fellowship year. They will be eligible for benefits including health insurance, and paid time off, and will be a member of the medical staff. There will be no guarantee of employment with the University of Colorado or Children’s Hospital Colorado after completion of the Fellowship.
