To study pituitary tumorigenesis
College students will be introduced to molecular endocrinology. The current summer project with be focused on predicting response to medical therapies with Growth hormone tumors causing acromegaly. A new focus of this lab is on using gene array technology to compare human pituitary tumors and normal pituitary from autopsy samples.
A list of potential genes has been identified and studies will ask whether these proteins are markers for tumor type or aggressiveness and study the function of these proteins in the development or maintenance of pituitary tumors.
We also have new projects to study adrenal cancer where there currently are no good treatment options. Analysis of the TCGA database has identified novel candidates to study their function in tumor formation or maintenance.
