MAP Program

In collaboration with Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSUD) faculty Dr. Hsiu-Ping Liu, Dr. Srinivas Ramachandran and Dr. Olivia Rissland have developed a paid internship program for MSUD STEM students within the BMG department. For more information please click here. 

The BMG department welcomes and encourages PhD students from all backgrounds as junior colleagues within our department. BMG does not admit PhD students directly, but has students from many different PhD programs on the CU Anschutz campus. We encourage future PhD students in the department to contact faculty that they might be interested in working with. We would like to highlight that the GRE is no longer required for graduate program admissions and that admissions fee waivers are available from the graduate school.

We are implementing new events and funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers from underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities in the sciences. 

BMG Postdoctoral Summer Seminar Series: Started in 2021, this initiative is an opportunity for individuals of racial and ethnic underrepresented backgrounds who are within approximately two years of completing their PhDs and are passionate about pursuing postdoctoral research in academia to share their thesis work with our community and meet potential postdoc mentors. Selected candidates present their research to the department in a 30 minute seminar, engage in one-on-one meetings with faculty members, connect with current postdocs in the department, dine with department members, and explore both the campus and Denver. Travel and lodging are fully covered.  

BMG Postdoctoral Professional Development Award: We have created a new funding opportunity for postdoctoral fellows including a $10,000 professional development supplemental fellowship for newly recruited postdoctoral scholars from underrepresented communities. 

RBI Postdoctoral Fellowship: Postdoctoral candidates working in the area of RNA biology are eligible to apply for a fellowship guaranteeing two years funding, supported through the RNA Biosciences Initiative (RBI). 

We encourage excellent postdoctoral scientists from underrepresented or marginalized communities to reach out directly to our Department Chair, Dr. Julie Cooper, even when there are no current postings for faculty positions. Please contact Dr. Cooper directly via email (julia.p.cooper@cuanschutz.edu) with the subject line “Faculty position inquiry via DEAR recruitment”. Regardless of if a formal interview offer is made, we can arrange a seminar (virtually for 2020-2021) for the candidate to share their work with our department and provide feedback. Our program provides financial incentives for minority junior faculty.  We also recognize that our junior faculty need to be supported. We are strongly focused on faculty mentoring and strategies to enhance the junior faculty experience. We are committed to coordinating (within BMG and with other departments) multiple hires from underrepresented communities, to accelerate the diversification of faculty on campus and foster a strong sense of community.
