Our Mission
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics believes that diversity, equity, and anti-racism (DEAR) means more than just policies and practices. We strive to foster a work environment that is inclusive of all individuals regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender and gender identity, disability, and military backgrounds. We recognize that embodying diversity, equity and inclusion in our Department and University culture takes both short and long term action, in multiple settings, and a commitment from individuals at all levels. We assert that every individual should feel valued and included at all times, and know that the diversity of our backgrounds is vital in generating new ideas and building a thriving relationship with our local community.
Education
Provide accessible, recurring, education and training programs to increase understanding of researchers, students and community members of diverse and historically underrepresented backgrounds.
Inclusion
Promote cohesion and inclusion within BMG by organizing advocate networks, peer-to-peer mentoring and department led team building gatherings.
Outreach
Create, promote and participate in activities which bring awareness of STEM, and STEM related careers, to historically underrepresented young students and communities.
Recruitment
Recruit and support students and researchers from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. Implement funding opportunities with transparent evaluation practices to foster a supportive environment, ensuring the retention of the individuals we recruit.

The Office of Disability, Access, & Inclusion welcomes qualified students with disabilities (e.g. psychological, learning, chronic health, sensory, or physical) and is committed to providing equitable access to our programs.
