Eligibility

Below is a list of eligibility criteria for trainees in the ACCORDS Primary Care Research Fellowship.  Applicants must meet the following seven conditions:

  1. Must be a physician (MD or DO), DDS, DMD, PharmD, or doctorally-trained non-physician (PhD or equivalent).
  2. Per HRSA, the individual to be trained must be a citizen or a noncitizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence at the time of appointment.
  3. Must want to pursue an academic career with a focus on research related to optimizing primary care. 
  4. Must not have any current or prior funding as a principal investigator at the R01 level or equivalent.
  5. Must not have been previously funded by a T32 fellowship grant
  6. Must agree to devote at least 75% of time to research training during fellowship training; clinicians may pursue clinical work related to their research for 25% of their time.  Trainees who leave the fellowship prior to two years of training may be subject to a payback agreement with HRSA.
  7. Must include a letter from the Chair of a primary care home department at the University of Colorado (e.g., Family Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry) to support the applicant’s required protected time of at least 75% Full-Time Effort (FTE) for the 2-year period of this fellowship and that also stipulates the commitments for the required $85,000 in matching funds ($42,500 annually)  that supports the fellowship mentors, research methods support in quantitative and qualitative analysis, tuition, travel and project support.

Prior experience in clinical research including training in epidemiology, biostatistics, and research design is also preferred for applicants, but not required.

Applications

A limited application cycle for the July 2025 fellowship cohort is now open. APPLICATIONS are DUE by March 1, 2025. We will begin reviewing applications on September 15th, 2024, for a start date of July 1st, 2025.

Early submission of materials is encouraged, as we will accept candidates on a rolling basis.

Scholars must commit 75% dedicated effort to their project in years 1 and 2.

The applicant’s home department at the University of Colorado will be required to provide $42,500 per year in matching funds for accepted scholars. 

These funds will be used to support at least $12,000 for research project expenses over the 2-year fellowship.

A letter of support for each application from a University of Colorado Primary care department must confirm these commitments.

  2. 1-2 page personal statement including overall career development plan, research goals, and mentorship needs
  3. Up to 3 letters of support,  1 letter of support must be written by a department chair/division chief (see item number 7 in the eligibility criteria listed above for the specific commitments). The other 1-2 letters of support should reference the applicant’s research accomplishments to date.
