Poster Presentation

The poster tracks will not be moderated. Posters will be grouped by theme (e.g. curriculum design, curriculum evaluation, etc). 

Poster presenters are expected to be standing by their poster during the poster session. Presenters should prepare a short (3 min) presentation of their poster to share with conference attendees. Light snacks will be served during the poster session. 

Poster mounting boards will be provided. The boards are 4'x8', and poster presenters are welcome to print any size of poster that will fit within those dimensions. If presenters are using their poster at another conference, you are encouraged to print the dimensions for that conference and use it at the Symposium, as long as it will fit within the 4'x8' mounting board.

Tips on designing a good poster layout and text may be found at:

• Include at least one visual/graphic. All text posters are hard on the eyes.
• Follow good, evidence-based visual design. Two helpful resources:

• Criteria from one visualization author for what makes an overall layout 
• Ask several peers to review your poster prior to printing
• Include logos of your department
• Acknowledge funding, mentors, and research support personnel

Oral Presentations

Oral presentations will be conducted in several formats, which reflect the topic being presented and, in a broader way, the diversity of high impact education strategies for learning. At least two presenters will be presenting in PechaKucha style, where oral presenters will be limited to 20 slides that advance every 20 seconds. At the 8th Annual Education Scholarship & Innovation Symposium on March 11, 2020, we will have both oral and poster research and scholarship presentations. These presentations provide education scholarship & innovation symposium members the opportunity to share original research, teaching tools, and innovative programs. We will consider submissions that focus on all types of educational scholarship including:

• Educational research with relevance to the health professions
• New methods of teaching in the classroom, the ward, clinic, or community
• New programs (including learning modules) involving students, residents, fellows or faculty
• Changes in the curriculum that affect health professional education in your setting
• New strategies and tools to evaluate students, residents, fellows or faculty
• Using technology in education

Note: presentations do not have to be of "pure research" projects. New and unique accomplishments, projects, ideas, and initiatives that demonstrate a scholarly approach to health professional education are welcome.

For all abstracts (and resulting posters and oral presentations​), the submission process will require authors to include:

• Background relevant to the topic
• Study or innovation/program objective(s)
• Detailed description of the research methods or innovation/program
• Results with appropriate analysis
• For research this may be either qualitative or quantitative analysis, with statistics as appropriate.
• For innovation/program this may be program evaluation, reflective critique or plans for program evaluation.
• Discussion that includes interpretation of results or impact of the innovation/program

Abstracts will be limited to 350 words.

All submissions will be reviewed using a standardized rubric​ and will selected as either an Oral Presentation or Poster Presentation.  Final decisions about acceptance and category will be made by the selection committee.  The selection committee will notify authors of the committee’s decision and will also be provided with feedback about their abstract​.

Abstracts will be reviewed as either research or an educational innovation based on the following criteria. Thank you to COMSEP for the original scoring criteria.

Goals:

Ö       The basic purpose of the research/project is clear

Ö       The objectives of the research/project address a problem of importance

 Background/Preparation: 

Ö       The author shows an understanding of existing literature

Ö       The author links the existing literature to the research/project

 Methods: 

Ö       The methods chosen and applied are appropriate for the research/project

Ö       The methods are clearly explained

 Analysis / Evaluation: 

Ö       The research analysis / project evaluation is appropriate for the respective research/project

Ö       The analysis/evaluation is clearly explained

 Results: 

Ö       There is evidence of significant research outcome / success of the project

o    For innovations, prelim results are acceptable or a plan for collecting results

Ö       The results contribute notably to the field

 Conclusions: 

Ö       Accurate interpretation of results

Ö       Possible recommendations for education, practice or policy

 Presentation:

Ö       The writing is clear

Ö       Each section is appropriately linked to other sections​
