Gabriel Kaliher (2025)

My name is Gabriel Kaliher and last year I got the amazing opportunity to be a part of the Mile High Phages internship and it was absolutely incredible. I had no clue what I wanted to do for college, hadn’t even taken biology yet, but my teacher showed me the internship and I gave it a shot because I wanted to help people, and I thought science was cool. Throughout the summer, you get multiple opportunities to meet people and hear their journey from the beginning of college, all the way to where they are today which helped relieve a lot of stress of trying to figure out what I wanted to do. The mentors were all amazing to talk to and were incredibly helpful throughout all lab work. Although I struggled at some points due to not taking biology previously, I was able to learn so much material that still sticks with me today. The course work was very engaging and I had so much fun despite spending most of the time working, and this internship truly helped set me on a path to figure out what I wanted to do in life.

Naila I Siddiqui (2025)

Growing up, I knew I wanted to work in the sciences and help people, but the path to get there was always a little bit fuzzy for me. That was until I was accepted into the Mile High Phages Program. This internship gifted me clarity and hands-on experience in a way I never expected; I got to conduct my own research, work with a team in a true lab environment, network with and learn from researchers, doctors, and leaders in their fields, and take part in many other amazing opportunities. From day one, our mentors explained not just what we were doing, but why it mattered. Daily discussions with researchers and physicians exposed me to diverse career paths and helped me envision my future with confidence. This program is more than just an internship; every person involved in the program, from the mentors running it to the people who donated time to visit and talk to the interns to the interns themselves, cares deeply about it and has shaped it into the life-changing opportunity it is. Mile High Phages didn’t just strengthen my research abilities; it gave me direction, community, and a deeper understanding of what it means to contribute meaningfully to science.

Isis Casareno  (2024)

My name is Isis Casareno, and I participated in SEA-PHAGES during the summer of 2024 as a sophomore in high school. I was paired with a college student, and together we had the opportunity to conduct hands-on research in phage discovery. The process was long and often unpredictable; our experiments rarely went smoothly on the first try. But those challenges taught me resilience and adaptability. By staying determined, we were ultimately able to successfully discover and name our own phage. Beyond the scientific experience, SEA-PHAGES introduced me to a diverse community of researchers whose backgrounds and stories were incredibly inspiring. It was my first real exposure to a research environment, and it strengthened both my passion for science and my desire to continue pursuing molecular biology as my college journey is around the corner.
