Kimber Simmons

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MD, MPH/MSPH
  • Anschutz Campus - Sch of Med - BDC Pediatric

Dr. Simmons joined the faculty in 2016 as a physician scientist studying the genetic, metabolic and immunologic diversity of autoimmune disease, with a focus on type 1 diabetes (T1D). Her current research interests are to identify and characterize children from diverse backgrounds who have islet autoimmunity, develop and disseminate a clinical model to monitor children with islet autoimmunity who do not yet have clinical T1D and investigate interventions that can modulate the autoimmune attack in the pancreas with the goal of preventing or delaying T1D onset. She has received a JDRF Career Development Award and K12 award to support this work. She is an active investigator in the Autoimmunity Screening for Kids program and in Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet. She is also leading the ASK the Experts program (type1experts.org), which provides confirmation testing, diabetes education and a monitoring plan to families who screen positive for one or more islet autoantibodies and their healthcare providers throughout the U.S. in close collaboration with T1Detect and TrialNet.
