OVERVIEW

Whereas other nations such as Australia or the United Kingdom have national registries, no mechanism is available in the United States to query the early natural history and response to existing medications in a diverse population of youth with PCOS. The unique US racial and ethnic diversity, as well as high rates of overweight and obesity, precludes the direct application of data from other countries to the US population. To address the need to better identify, distinguish, and care for girls with PCOS, this multi-center study involving the leading US clinician investigators in PCOS has been established. The goal of the project is to describe the reproductive and metabolic presentation, natural history and response to therapy of PCOS in a large sample of diverse youth.  
 
Aim 1: Describe the heterogeneous presentation and co-morbidities at the time of diagnosis of PCOS in a geographically, ethnically and racially diverse cohort of youth in the United States   
 
Aim 2: Determine the response to common management strategies (lifestyle, estrogen containing contraception, metformin) 

Impact: This data will represent a first step toward future prospective studies aimed at investigating the response to long term metabolic and reproductive therapies, including studies to develop precision phenotype+genomics and pharmaco genonics strategies. 

To accomplish this, we have built a REDCap database to collect data on the diagnosis & clinical course of adolescents with PCOS in the U.S. Long-term, we hope to use this to leverage for additional funding to make a nationwide registry, with a prospective cohort.
