Business in Medicine

Course Director: J. Alexander Torres, MD

We are excited to have Nate Schomaker, MD as our featured speaker. Dr. Schomaker is a gastroenterologist with South Denver Gastroenterology, where he also serves on the executive committee. In addition to his extensive clinical experience, he brings deep expertise in the administrative and business aspects of running a successful GI practice.

Dr. Schomaker will present an overview of the major practice models available to gastroenterologists today, including:

  • Academic
  • Community/private practice
  • Hybrid models
  • Hospital-employed/hospitalist
  • Locum tenens
  • Emerging alternatives (e.g., concierge, direct-to-consumer, and integrated care delivery)

For each model, he will discuss the key advantages and challenges, as well as practical insights into building and sustaining a thriving practice. Particular areas of focus will include:

  • Establishing and operating an ambulatory surgical center (ASC), with emphasis on cost management, operational efficiencies, and reimbursement strategies
  • Critical legal and partnership considerations (Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, corporate practice of medicine issues, etc.)
  • Day-to-day operational and leadership topics relevant to practice administrators and physician owners

Strategies for creating and capturing value—for both yourself and your practice—regardless of the model you choose.
