John Peters, a leading researcher and strategist in nutrition, obesity and diabetes, is charged with developing groundbreaking research and programming in nutrition, exercise and healthy behavior. Prior to joining CU, he spent 26 years in food and beverage, health care, and corporate new business research and development for Procter & Gamble Company. He is also involved in public health initiatives promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors. He is co-founder and chief executive officer of America on the Move and past president of the International Life Science Institute Center for Health Promotion. Peters has published over 150 scientific papers and reviews and co-authored The Step Diet book.
Dr. Peters worked with Dr. Purcell to establish the BfitBwell Program at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. He oversees program operations at the AHWC and has helped establish the BFitBWell research program and registry. As a cancer survivor himself, Dr. Peters is passionate about the success and future growth of the program.
Nicole the Program Manager of the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program and an Exercise Physiologist.
She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Exercise Science from Colorado State University in 2006. Nicole has 14 years’ experience working in the health and fitness industry, from managing high-end government fitness sites in the D.C. Metro area, to overseeing clinical patients in a hospital setting for cardiac, and pulmonary rehab programs as well as working with outpatient physical therapy. Nicole joined the CU Anschutz Health and Wellness Center in early 2012, and has been an integral part of getting the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program up and off the ground since its inception, and has been deeply involved in the development, day to day operation, and growth of the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program since its launch in August of 2013. Nicole has worked with hundreds of cancer patients over the years and finds great joy in being able to bring some hope and relief to every one of them through teaching them the power and benefits of exercise. It is such an honor to be part of such an intimate part of their challenging journey.
Ian is the Lead Exercise Physiologist and a Professional Research Assistant with the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise program. He joined the BfitBwell team in the summer of 2016, completing an internship with the program upon graduating from Colorado State University with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Science. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for working with cancer survivors and accepted a full-time position as an Exercise Physiologist and Professional Research Assistant with the BfitBwell in February of 2017. Ian creates exercise programs and works with patients in both individual and semi-private sessions. On top of his time spent training her also manages the Social Media platforms for BfitBwell. Ian is a certified Cancer Exercise Trainer (CET) through the American College of Sports Medicine, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and a Movement and Mobility Specialist through The Ready State (TRS-S).
Felipe is an exercise specialist with the BfitBwell Cancer exercise program. He joined the team during the summer of 2022 while attaining his graduate degree from California Baptist University. He has been working in the health and fitness industry for the past five years, specifically in rehabilitation and sports medicine. He found a passion in the rehabilitation process due to his collegiate career playing football. Felipe has enjoyed working in the in-patient hospital setting with patients’ recovery from a variety of diagnosis. His curiosity has had him stuck around the medical field which developed compassion and empathy for the participants going through the recovery process.
Jared is the Data Specialist for the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program. He received his Bachelor of Science in Adult Fitness and Exercise Science from Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2015. Jared completed an internship with BfitBwell in the fall of 2015 and joined the team as Data Specialist in the summer of 2017. He assists the program with integrating various aspects of research into the clinical program, maintaining and managing data used in research, and coordinating other tasks related to research. He is certified as an Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) through the American College of Sports Medicine, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Dr. Ryan J. Marker is an Assistant Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. He completed both his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree (2011) and PhD Rehabilitation Science (2015) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. During this time, he investigated the neurophysiologic mechanisms of stress-induced muscle activity and neck pain. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center working with the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program, establishing a standardized assessment and research database, and performing a prospective study of exercise in pancreatic cancer survivors undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy preparing for surgery. After being a core faculty member in the Physical Therapy Program at Ithaca College in NY for two years, he returned to the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. His primary interests now lie in developing and implementing effective and accessible fitness programs for patients with cancer and other chronic medical conditions. He continues to work with the BfitBwell Cancer Exercise Program and is developing and managing programs for individuals with chronic kidney disease, individuals after bariatric surgery, individuals with multiple sclerosis, and individuals with Parkinson’s Disease at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center. His research focuses on the development and delivery of effective and accessible fitness programs, with a particular focus on virtual physical assessment and exercise prescription. He also has several projects investigating the effects of exercise, specifically on fatigue.
