Story by: Abigail Castro
Ian Sanborn is a second-year Physical Therapy student. Ian grew up playing a variety of sports and was fortunate to continue his passion for track throughout his undergraduate years. This instilled in him a deep appreciation for exercise and physical activity. However, during college, Ian sustained an injury during one of his track seasons and required physical therapy. Through this experience, he not only returned to track but also rediscovered his confidence in himself and his athletic abilities. Inspired by this journey, he felt a calling to support other young athletes on their paths to recovery. Thus, Ian chose to pursue a career as a physical therapist, viewing it as the most impactful way to empower fellow athletes.Ian appreciates that the CU Physical Therapy program gave him comprehensive insight into physical therapy by providing clinical opportunities throughout the curriculum. Additionally, it has equipped him with abundant professional resources, facilitating his journey towards his aspirations. Ian recalls moments he has shared with patients to keep him motivated while in school, “when a patient gets excited about doing something for the first time or when they sincerely thank me for what I’m doing... these moments warm my heart and help me remember that I am still making a difference in people’s lives.”
May is a month to celebrate the resilience and heritage of Asian cultures. Ian says, “A key value in my culture is to cultivate a better tomorrow for future generations and to uplift others. I hope to build a culture of empowerment and support, in whatever setting that I go to, for the patients and for the clinicians. I believe that this will create a safe and positive environment for everyone to achieve their goals.” Ian has words of encouragement for students of color pursuing careers in healthcare, “Believe in yourself. On this journey, it is important to celebrate the little wins that come with each day and to surround yourself with people that bring you joy and encouragement.”
