Residency Training Program Overview
PM&R Residency Program
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is one of the oldest PM&R departments in the country. The residency training program has graduated many well-known physiatrists through the decades, practicing all over the country. The program has grown to 6 residents per year, starting after a transitional year. This is a three-year PM&R categorical residency training program. The residency is fully accredited by ACGME and received a five-year review cycle, testifying to the robust health of the program. The residency is designed to nurture residents as they begin their careers. Our graduates work across all subspecialties within PM&R (SCI, TBI, MSK, Sports, Spine, Pain, Pediatrics, Palliative Care, etc) and in all practice types (Academic, Private Practice, VA, Hospital-based).
Our residents are encouraged to be independent thinkers in order to meet the increasing and future needs of the disabled. To that end, the philosophy of our program is to train residents to understand the full breadth of the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Our residents have performed extremely well in training and board examinations and are highly competitive for employment and fellowship positions.

Combined Pediatrics/PM&R Residency Program
The Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Pediatrics joined forces to offer an educational and training experience to those interested in Pediatric Physiatry. This five-year program includes an internship in Pediatrics (12 months) followed
by four years divided between Pediatrics (18 months) and Physiatry (30 months) as outlined by the residency review committee. The final year includes specific experience in Pediatric Physiatry, provided by the Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Department
at Children’s Hospital Colorado. After successful completion of the Combined Pediatrics/PM&R Residency, these physicians qualify for admission to the certification examinations of both the American Board of Pediatrics and American Board
of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
