Department of Pediatrics has produced a 216-page coffee table book on the history of this prestigious department, beginning with its founding in 1930. The book is designed with a pictorial timeline as the centerpiece, giving readers a chronological
account of the Department’s achievements and the people who made them happen. The narrative was written in a journalistic, story-telling manner that conveys the heart of this Department’s rich legacy as well as the high points of the nearly nine decades. Together, these components create a retrospective of the Department’s
contributions over 88 years in the areas of clinical expertise, training, research, advocacy, and innovation.
Past and current faculty have been generous in sharing highlights and photos, allowing the Department to assemble a strong collection
of images, milestones, profiles, and reflections.
It is important to understand the history of an institution as it can be a cause for celebration and create the platform for future accomplishments. This was the impetus to revisit the milestones
of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in our partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Children's Hospital Colorado Ranked Top 10 in Nation
Department of Pediatrics Jun 21, 2016U.S. News & World Report has named Children’s Hospital Colorado to its 2016-17 Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, placing Children’s Colorado among the top 10 children’s hospitals in the nation.
Of the 183 pediatric hospitals invited to participate in this year’s survey, only 11 children’s centers nationwide qualified for the Honor Roll. The Honor Roll recognizes the centers that excel in at least three of the 10 Best Children’s Hospital specialties. Children’s Colorado ranked in all 10 pediatric specialty areas and is the only ranked children’s hospital in the multi-state region.
“The U.S. News Best Children’s Hospitals rankings help parents select the best medical care for their children,” said Jena Hausmann, Children’s Hospital Colorado president and CEO. “Children’s Colorado is proud to be a leader in reimagining child health, and our focus on providing top family-centered care, exceptional outcomes and child health advocacy will not waiver. Being ranked among the best of the best reaffirms that our pediatric-focused physicians, nurses, specialists and our entire team are the best at what they do.”
Continually ranked among the best
Every year since 1993, U.S. News and World Report has ranked both adult and pediatric hospitals nationwide. The rankings are based on clinical data and surveys of thousands of specialists around the country. Since the inception of the rankings, Children’s Colorado has been recognized among the best in the nation.
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings highlight the top 50 U.S. pediatric facilities in cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. Based on a combination of clinical data and reputation surveys of pediatric specialists, 78 of the 183 surveyed hospitals ranked in one or more specialties.
The methodology reflects the level and quality of hospital resources directly related to patient care, such as staffing, technology and special services; delivery of healthcare, such as reputation among pediatric specialists, programs that prevent infections and adherence to best practices; and clinical outcomes, such as patient survival, infection rates and complications.
“The pediatric centers on the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll show exceptional dedication and expertise, and they deserve our congratulations,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “Children with life-threatening or rare conditions need the kind of care that these hospitals deliver day after day.”
