Meet Dr. Michael Nguyen, a dedicated hospitalist and assistant professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at CU Anschutz. With a passion for patient care, medical education, and the fast-paced nature of hospital medicine, Dr. Nguyen brings a unique perspective to his role. We recently asked him what he loves most about being a hospitalist, what inspires him in his daily work, and how he enjoys his time outside of work. Read on to hear his insights!
"There are countless reasons why I love being a hospitalist! Beyond the privilege of caring for patients from all walks of life and supporting them during the vulnerable experience of hospitalization, I am continually fascinated by the diversity of cases I encounter. One of the aspects I appreciate most, however, is the incredible flexibility and variety within hospital medicine. The field offers opportunities to perform procedures, manage step-down level care, provide consult services, and specialize in areas like addiction medicine and geriatrics.
The flexibility in our schedules is another major perk—allowing me to escape to the mountains for a midweek snowboarding trip without the crowds, take care of errands and appointments with ease, and even travel with some of my closest friends. Here’s a photo from one of those adventures—exploring Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, with my fellow hospitalists and friends from residency, Jordan Williams and Tyler Harris!"

Dr. Nguyen’s love for hospital medicine is evident in the dynamic experiences, flexibility, and meaningful patient connections that make each day unique. From managing diverse cases to embracing opportunities for adventure and balance, his journey highlights the richness of the field. His insights remind us of the vital role hospitalists play in improving patient outcomes and shaping the future of medicine. Thank you for taking the time to read our Hospitalist Highlight!
