Hospitalist Highlight: Katarzyna Mastalerz, MD
Q&A
Nov 22, 2024Dr. Katarzyna Mastalerz is an associate professor at the Division of Hospital Medicine at CU Anschutz. She recently published an article in the Journal of General Internal Medicine about patient and interprofessional healthcare team member experiences of bedside interdisciplinary rounds. This research found that the experiences of bedside interdisciplinary rounds (BIDR) are generally positive and that there is large heterogeneity in existing BIDR frameworks. Through this research, they determined that there needs to be further exploration to define best practices. To learn more about #CUDHM hospitalist, Dr. Mastalerz, we asked a few questions about her research and what we can expect to see from her in the future!
Q: Tell me about the research project on experiences of bedside interdisciplinary rounds.
A: We had a great research team and got a lot of rich data from this study. It was really exciting hear participants discuss in what ways bringing the interprofessional team to the bedside builds trust between patients and providers and within interprofessional teams. Because of great input from patients, nurses, care coordinators, and pharmacists, we were able to provide recommendations for “best practices” around BIDR, which include using patient-centered language and avoiding medical jargon, providing specific care plans, using standardized communication, and implementing hospital structures that promote interprofessional team inclusion.
Q: What are you working on now/what can we expect from you in the future?
A: I’m interested in how the rise in the use of digital technologies (particularly Secure Chat) for communication in hospitals impacts interprofessional team relationships, communication, and workflow.
