CU PM&R is excited to introduce our new Chief Residents! Today we are spotlighting incoming Chief Resident Dr. Samantha Koerber.

What made you want to pursue a career in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation?

Prior to medical school, I spent a lot of time working with children with disabilities through various jobs and volunteering opportunities related to adaptive sports. I wanted to continue working with children and adolescents with disabilities in medicine, so when I discovered pediatric physical medicine and rehabilitation, I knew it was the perfect fit!

What made you want to choose CU PM&R for residency?

CU PM&R offers diverse clinical training across multiple hospital systems, which is extremely valuable to see how rehabilitation medicine functions in different settings. I was also drawn to this program for the positive and supportive relationship between residents and attendings, strong pediatric rehabilitation training and mentorship, opportunities to participate in adaptive sports programs in the mountains, and the collaborative research environment.

How would you describe your time as a resident at CU PM&R so far?

I have loved my time as a resident so far! The residency culture is exemplary, characterized by unwavering support and collaboration, deep compassion for patients from all backgrounds, and a commitment to education and continuous improvement.

What are your goals as our new Chief Residents? What skills do you hope to develop as Chief?

Our goals are to progress the excellent momentum from the chiefs before us to continue strengthening our clinical rotations, medical education, and engagement with medical students. I hope to gain more knowledge of the behind-the-scenes operations of a residency program, and I aim to advance my leadership skills in communication and advocacy.

What are your goals after you complete residency at CU?

I plan to apply to pediatric rehabilitation medicine fellowships and eventually practice in an academic setting to continue clinical work, research, and medical education.

Anything else you would like to share?

I feel constantly grateful to be a part of the CU PM&R family. I sincerely believe that our program supports and promotes our individual interests and goals in PM&R to make us stronger clinicians, researchers, and leaders in the field.
