Joel P. Carmichael, DC, PhD is an Adjoint Senior Instructor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation where he has been a member of the RESTORE Rehabilitation Research Group since 2015. He earned his PhD in Clinical Science from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2021, with a doctoral thesis focused on novel approaches to rehabilitation following total knee arthroplasty. His research within the RESTORE group has led to peer-reviewed publications in journals including Knee, Disability and Rehabilitation, and Advances in Aging Research, investigating topics such as swelling management and app-guided home exercise after joint replacement, as well as pain mapping in spinal conditions. Dr. Carmichael has presented this work at national venues including the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting and the American College of Rheumatology Annual Meeting. He also holds a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Logan University with highest honors, and brings more than 40 years of clinical experience in spine, sports, and musculoskeletal medicine — including service as lead provider for USA Beach Volleyball at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Outside the clinic and classroom, Dr. Carmichael finds his greatest joy walking and hiking alongside his wife of 45 years.
