Medicine Consult

The Medicine Consult Service is a long-standing service line within the Division of Hospital Medicine which aims to provide comprehensive perioperative and consultative medical expertise to services throughout the hospital.

From a clinical standpoint, the Medicine Consult Service is responsible for co-managing medically complex orthopedic, geriatric trauma, and neurosurgical patients, as well as providing general medical consultation to surgical subspecialties, neurology, OB/GYN, and other services at the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH).

From an educational standpoint, the Medicine Consult Service aims to equip learners with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to excel in inpatient consultative medicine and co-management of surgical patients. The service is considered a core rotation for our Hospitalist Training Program residents and advanced practice fellows, and is a popular elective for fourth-year medical students.

Orthopedic Co-management

The Medicine Consult Service co-manages medically complex patients on the Orthopedic Service at UCH by attending daily interprofessional rounds with the teams involved and making medical decisions collaboratively.

Trauma Co-management

In 2018, the Medicine Consult Service began co-managing geriatric trauma patients on the Trauma & Acute Care Surgery (TACS) Service at UCH to support its move to a Level 1 trauma center.

Neurosurgery Spine Co-management

In 2021, the Medicine Consult Service began co-managing/collaborating on medically complex spinal surgery patients on the Neurosurgery Service at UCH.
