Learn more about Dr. William Turbyfill, the research study and what you can expect to see from him in the future through this Q&A below:
Q: What excited you most about the research project on better gender representation and new career trends in internal medicine chief residents?
A: The excitement of this project came from a true curiosity about what happens to Chief Medical Residents once they finish their training. There were many assumptions but no systematic review of how these residents ultimately define their careers. We were able to formally ascertain that Chief Residents were more likely to remain in Academic medicine, use Chief residency as a stepping stone for sub-specialty training, CRQS positions are on the rise and there is a trend towards better representation in the Chief Resident positions.
Q: What are you working on now/what can we expect from you in the future?
A: Working with the group of VA hospitalists at multiple sites around the country we are working to expand on the study findings. We hope to leverage this information to find ways to improve Chief Residency positions, not only for the institutions but for the Chief Residents themselves. I feel lucky to be part of such an engaged and dedicated group of researchers, clinicians and educators.
