Biobank Participants Share Experience With COVID-19

Feb 22, 2022

We completed the second round of our COVID-19 survey. Over 25,000 of you responded – thank you! We linked information collected from the survey with electronic health records at UCHealth to learn more about the experience and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic among Biobank participants. This data was de-identified so that researchers cannot identify respondents.

This is what we learned from our members:

  • Over 40% were tested for COVID-19 and of those tested, 13% were positive
  • Young adults (aged 18 to 39) and participants who identify as Hispanic were more likely to have positive tests
  • 84% had 1 or more COVID-related symptoms from February 2020 to October 2021
  • 75% reported a negative impact of COVID-19 in one or more domains: physical health, mental health, family life, and employment
  • Women reported greater negative impacts than men across all domains
  • Young adults were more likely to report a negative impact on their mental health
  • Participants who identify as black or African American reported negative impacts on employment more often
  • 95% have received 1 or more doses of the vaccine

The information that so many of you shared may help researchers and public health workers understand the impacts of the pandemic and why some groups are more affected than others. Please check our website for updates. Thank you again for all of you who contributed. The greatest strength and value of the Biobank is our members!

How has the coronavirus pandemic impacted your physical health, mental health, family life and employment?
Results differed by age (A), race (B), gender (C) and covid-19 test status (D).
