Application Process

Please see the following criteria for the University of Colorado General Surgery Residency Program.

Apply on ERAS = Electronic Residency Application System, through the medical school’s Dean’s office with the standard application items. Preferred set of recommendation letters includes 3 faculty LORs plus a Chair's letter.

ECFMG is used by foreign medical school students. Residents in our program must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or possess the appropriate documentation to allow Resident to legally train at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. We have a few ECFMGs in our program.

Step I and Step II should both be taken. University of Colorado looks at the entire application when considering applicants, and looks for a passing score on Step I and Step II.

Over 2,000 people will apply for the University of Colorado Surgical Residency Program through ERAS prior to the match. Approximately 100 will be interviewed. All interviews will be done virtually this academic year. In the past interviews have been held Mondays with a reception on Sunday night. This year, the day of the week may vary through the interview season, and there will most likely be a virtual social hour as part of the interview day. Interviews are done from November through January.

Participation in two research educational years are listed on the NRMP as a 2-year component of the Program for all 11 categorical positions. This research/academic time to be taken after the PGY-2 or PGY-3 years has been expected of all categorical residents entering the program since June 2017.

Applications are due November 15th. Invitations to interview will begin in late October and are for categorical track applicants only. The Program Directors calls directly those preliminary applicants they wish to contact.

Positions for PGY 2, 3, 4 are only available should there become an opening due to attrition. If available, those positions would be posted on the APDS website. Due to the workload of the program, inquiries about positions without an APDS posting will not be answered.

The following PGY-1 positions are available: 11 Categorical, 13 Preliminary Surgery

This year, Medical Students interested in doing a sub-internship at University of Colorado should check with the Dean’s office prior to making plans to come to campus. You should contact the Dean’s office or look up current status electronically on their website. As this opportunity reopens, applications should be submitted through VSAS and send to University of Colorado School of Medicine Dean's office. The school’s extern page lists CU’s requirements and has the link to VSAS.
