Surgery Styles -- "surgery-spaced" class
Members of the intern class arrive for their welcome lunch on June 16, 2023
We offer a seven-year general surgical residency training program, approved for 80 resident positions and to graduate 11 chief residents in general surgery each year.
The internship currently has 27 positions: 11 categorical general surgery residents and 10 preliminary positions in general surgery, with a total of 21 in General Surgery. The final 6 positions consist of 3 Urology categorical positions, 2 Plastic Surgery integrated, and 1 Vascular Surgery integrated position. In order to apply for Urology, Plastic Surgery integrated, or Vascular Surgery integrated positions, please contact those programs directly. There are also up to 2 preliminary positions available for a second year of surgical training.
In Academic Year 24-25, the internship will have 11 categorical positions, plus 10 preliminary General Surgery positions, and there will be 1 preliminary position at the PGY-2 level. These changes are due to an increase in categorical and decrease in preliminary residents in the program overall.
Our categorical residents are expected to spend two years in the Department's research labs, in research labs outside the institution, or in academic endeavors such as postgraduate education. Applicants entering the program with a PhD can establish a mentored curriculum plan tailored to their career goals.
The majority of our graduates continue training in fellowship programs or embark on academic careers.
With the requirements of the Residency Review Committee and the American Board of Surgery, we provide a broad, well-balanced surgical experience that can be adjusted to the career goals of individual residents. Every effort is made to ensure that each resident receives an equivalent experience and fulfills the specific requirements of the Board of Surgery.
