I am an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes. I have had continuous NIH funding for clinical research in obesity, nutrition, and physical activity (PA) since completing my clinical endocrinology fellowship. My research interests lie in the development and testing of innovative strategies to improve lifestyle treatments of obesity, specifically focusing on alterations of the timing or pattern of physical activity and energy intake. I am the Director of Innovation in Weight Management Programs at the Anschutz Health & Wellness Center (AHWC) where I lead a multidisciplinary team in the development and implementation of the AHWC portfolio of community-based weight loss and maintenance programs. I am the Associate Director of the Colorado Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (NORC) Clinical Intervention and Translation (CIT) Core which provides weight loss interventions for human clinical trials. I am also the Medical Director of the University of Colorado (CU) Medicine Weight Management and Wellness Clinic and maintain a clinical practice focusing on treatment of diabetes and obesity. I have substantial expertise in clinical trials development and implementation as PI of three large NIH-funded interventional weight loss trials (R01 DK097266, R01 DK111622, R01 DK126814). I have 8 years of mentoring experience supporting new and early-stage investigators in POR (undergraduate, graduate, and medical students; MD/DO and PhD post-doctoral research fellows; and junior faculty). My mentees have an excellent record of publication productivity, NIH grant funding, successful career transitions, and retention in academic medicine. Post-doctoral trainees and junior faculty I have directly mentored have received: multiple research commendation awards (n=31, including 4 NORC outstanding pre- and post-doctoral fellow of the year awards), travel grants (n=7), internal pilot grants (n=6), external AHA or ACSM foundation grants (n=3), NIH LRP (n=2), NIH T32 (n=3), NIH F32 (n=3), NIH CTSA KL2 (n=1), K01 (n=3), R03 (n=1), R21 (n=1) and R01 (n=2) awards. I am the recipient of an NIH/NHLBI K24 Mid-Career Investigator Award in Patient Oriented Research, have participated in CCTSI Mentorship Training activities (Co-Mentor Program), and received the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) Outstanding Mentor Award in 2020.
