The new training program enhancing geriatric care access for older Coloradans.
GeriCare Everywhere is an initiative made possible by funding from the 2023 Colorado General Assembly’s SB23-031 bill, and creates training opportunities for graduate students working to become healthcare providers at both CU Anschutz, and across Colorado, to better tailor their clinical care to geriatric medicine and older adults. This includes expanding the access of clinical training sites to rural and underserved populations in Colorado.
Over the past decade, Colorado has had the second-fastest-growing rate of residents over the age of 65 in the United States, placing high-resource demands on the state's health-care system. There are a small number of physicians trained in geriatrics across the state, relative to those needed to serve this ever-growing population.
To meet growing healthcare needs among older Coloradoans, this certificate program will develop Geriatric Care clinical health professionals through innovative educational pedagogies designed to facilitate learning for a broad range of healthcare providers in up-to-date, evidence-based geriatrics care concepts using didactic and clinical learning environments.
The program consists of 10 healthcare disciplines, each with a Faculty Program Coordinator and two trainees, with academic training spanning from September to June. The Fall courses cover the 5 M’s of geriatric care:
The Spring courses focus on interprofessional health discipline. Interprofessional clinical rotations span both semesters along with the course work.
