Mucosal melanoma is a cancer that arises from normal melanocyte cells in mucosal tissues. Melanocytes are the pigment-producing cells located in the skin, but they are actually located in different "barrier tissues" all throughout the body. Mucosal melanomas are the most "anatomically" diverse type of melanoma since they can develop in any mucosal tissue throughout the body. However, the three most common sites are: nasal/sinal, anal/rectal, and vulvar/vaginal.
