OftalmologoalDia Jul 1, 2017In the third edition of the Review of Ophthalmology in Spanish, an exclusive interview was published between Dr. Fernando Arévalo, president of the Department of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Dr. Valeria Canto-Soler, named as Director of the Ocular Stem Cell and Regeneration Program at the University of Colorado.
Dr. Valeria Canto-Soler: The possibility of regenerating the photoreceptor cells that die during the process of retinal degeneration from stem cells has aroused great interest in the last 10-15 years, and in a certain sense has been the motor that has driven a very defined area of Research within the field of ophthalmology. However, the results obtained so far have not been very encouraging, since the transplanted photoreceptor cells have not been sufficiently effective in integrating into the recipient retina and reaching an adequate level of functional maturation. For the most part, these trials have consisted in a subretinal injection of photoreceptor cells in suspension.
