Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose the University of Colorado?

You are looking for the program that will train you to be the doctor you always wanted to be. At the University of Colorado, we value diversity of training, autonomy, and collegiality.  Our graduates are well-prepared for any and all career choices, built on a foundation of clinical excellence. We offer five different pathways (Clinical Educator, Global Health, Health Equity / Health Disparity, Leadership, and Research), five different tracks (Categorical, Primary Care, Hospitalist, Preliminary year, Physician Scientist Training Program), and three primary clinical sites to support your development as a physician. Importantly, not only do we collaborate to provide the best care possible to our patients, we also enjoy life together in the city of Denver and everything Colorado has to offer.

Please submit your application by Wednesday, September 28, 2022. The last day we will accept an application for review is  October 6, 2022 at 4pm.

We do not have a set USMLE or COMLEX cut-off score; however, most of our applicants score above 225 on USMLE Step 1. We expect that individuals have passed the exams on their first attempt and performed competitively. We do accept COMLEX scores in lieu of USMLE. The minimum required COMLEX score is 600.

USMLE Step 2 scores are not required at the time of application but must be completed before starting residency.

We require a Chairman's or departmental letter and three letters of recommendation. That is a total of 4 letters. The Chairman's letter is optional for prelim applicants.

While most of our residents do not take time off between medical school and residency, we will evaluate the applications of all individuals holistically, including those who have been out of school for an extended period of time.

Step 3 scores are not included in our requirements and we do not generally give those applicants with step 3 scores any type of advantage. If you are an International Medical Graduate, taking your Step 3 exam is required before you submit your rank list.

We will communicate with all applicants regarding whether they are invited for an interview, added to our waitlist, or if we, unfortunately, will be unable to meet by mid-October.

As a courtesy to our applicants, our program adheres to the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine recommendations regarding limited post-interview communication. Our intent is to avoid any potential miscommunication and to prevent undue stress on our applicants. If you have questions about our program following your interview, we highly encourage you to contact IMRP-Recruitment@ucdenver.edu

However, you should not anticipate routine communication from the program following your interview. Accordingly, it is not necessary to send us thank you notes or emails. We hope that your initial interview day is a wonderful opportunity for our team to meet you and for you to learn about our program. We neither encourage nor require second visits. A second visit should only take place if you feel that it will help with your own rank list decision. For further information on the AAIM/APDIM guidelines for post-interview communication and second looks, please feel free to visit the following AAIM Webpage.

    Currently we have 183 trainees (73 interns including the prelims, 52 R2s, 52 R3s, 16 Med-Peds).

Of course! We have enrollment periods each year to give the opportunity for trainees to switch tracks. We recognize career plans change so if you find yourself wanting to switch tracks or pathways, you certainly can do so. Please keep in mind that we strongly recommend you stay in the track you matched into for the first 6-months to get a feel before changing.

Tracks are the type of residency program you will follow throughout your residency training. We offer 5 different track experiences - categorical, primary care, hospitalist training, physician scientist training program, or preliminary. These are what you apply to when you apply for a residency position at Colorado.

Pathways add "flavor" to your training and are considered an educational deep dive. We have 5 different pathways to help you further specialize your training - global health, health equity / health disparity, clinical education, medical leaders, and research. Pathways are chosen at the beginning of your second year.

The overlay of tracks and pathways encourages specialization and personalization of your residency training.

Absolutely. We welcome applicants participating in the couples match and will be flexible in arranging your interview day as well as your schedule should you match with us. Please let us know if you have any special needs.

    Yes. We offer preliminary positions.

We have several opportunities to spend time internationally. Some of the most traveled rotations are with the Zimbabwe International Exchange program in Harare, Zimbabwe, and the Guatemala Global Health elective in Coatepeque, Guatemala. Additionally, there are opportunities through the Johnson and Johnson Global Health Scholars program.

The University does not allow observerships if you are not currently in medical school or a residency program.  If you are in medical school, you can apply for a rotation here:  https://www.ucdenver.edu/academics/colleges/medicalschool/education/studentaffairs/extern/Pages/default.aspx

    Yes.

All of our sites are very close in proximity. The most amount of time it would take between our two furthest sites is 30 minutes. You will likely experience smaller travel times given our trainees' typical commute during non-rush hours times.

The majority of residents rent within the Denver metropolitan area, including Aurora which borders Denver and is an incredibly diverse location to live. Any of these areas are in close proximity to all our training sites. We have a mixture of renters and buyers.

We do not as applications for PGY-1 positions are only accepted via ERAS.
