Starting July 1, 2024, Dr. Fiona Zwald will serve as the new Program Director for the MSDO fellowship. She will also oversee the educational curriculum for the fellowship.
Affiliated faculty include: The Chair of Dermatology (Dr. Maryam Asgari), Oculoplastics (Dr. Eric Hink and Dr. Sophie Liao); Cutaneous Oncology (Dr. Theresa Medina); Radiation Oncology (Dr. Ryan Lanning); ENT Facial Plastics (Dr. Adam Terella); and Dermatopathology (Dr. Joshua Wisell and Dr. Whitney High).
The fellowship focuses on the management of complex cutaneous oncology patients at a tertiary medical center. Fellows participate in Mohs micrographic surgery five days a week, with an average case volume of approximately 1,500 Mohs cases per year. Training emphasizes Mohs surgery, surgical reconstruction, and multi-disciplinary patient care. Fellows are exposed to the full range of surgical and medical management of cutaneous neoplasms. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in Dr. Zwald's Transplant Dermatology Clinic that occurs weekly in the transplant center. There is no dedicated cosmetic or general dermatology portion of the fellowship.
The faculty and fellows in MSDO participate in translational and clinical research, including tumor banking. They also participate in the University of Colorado Cutaneous Oncology Research Collaborative. MSDO fellows are required to undertake at least one independent research with encouragement to pursue additional scholarly projects during the academic year. Fellows must also submit an abstract to a national presentation before the end of their training.
Salary, vacation, and benefits are set by the University of Colorado Graduate Medical Education Department. The MSDO fellow is considered a PGY-5 position, regardless of prior years of training.
The Graduate Medical Education website will provide additional information on the fellowship program, as well as an informative video on training at the University of Colorado.
Fellows are allowed to moonlight at other clinics, but these hours will count toward their total allowed work hours per week.
