At Department of Biomedical Informatics(DBMI), we’re revolutionizing care where it matters most: at the bedside.

We’re an academic home for a community of experts who leverage data, machine learning, and genomics to turn basic science into new therapies and tailored treatments to empower providers with insights that enable them to deliver patients the exact care they need.

Our partnerships with the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, UC Health, and Children’s Hospital Colorado empower us to make a real-world impact right here in our community. We’re not just making strides locally—we’re teaming up with researchers, universities, and health systems worldwide to tackle healthcare’s toughest challenges. Together, we translate research into practical solutions that directly impact patient outcomes.

Discovery & Impact

Discovery and Impact

Pediatric sepsis, a severe inflammatory response to trauma that leads to organ failure and tissue death, claims around 3.3 million children's lives annually, particularly affecting lower-resource clinics. In January, a team from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus introduced the first update to pediatric sepsis diagnostic criteria in two decades, utilizing a novel, data-driven scoring system that enhances diagnosis by focusing on organ dysfunction rather than just inflammatory response. Led by Tell Bennett, PhD, MS, this new Phoenix criteria is designed to align with adult definitions and can be applied in healthcare settings worldwide based on data collected from hospitals in various countries.

Key Focus Areas

Genomics

Collaborating with the CCPM biobank, we integrate electronic health records (EHRs) with omics and genetic data to enhance patient care and clinical decision-making. Our experts develop clinical decision support tools that provide real-time insights based on this integrated data, helping clinicians make informed choices.

Omics and Disease

DBMI uses advanced technologies to analyze large-scale molecular data. We apply bioinformatics tools and machine learning to interpret this data, identify biomarkers, and understand molecular interactions. We can understand how genetic changes contribute to disease mechanisms by integrating omics data.

Clinical Informatics

We use information technology and data effectively to improve patient care and health outcomes. It involves collecting, analyzing, and managing health information, integrating clinical data with healthcare processes to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows, and support clinical research.
