Multidisciplinary QI Project Aimed at Improving Rates of Routine HIV Screening Among Teens in Pediatric Emergency Care Settings

HIV Screening in Pediatric Emergency Care Settings: A QI Initiative

Since 2010, the CDC has recommended routine HIV screening for adolescents presenting to any type of medical care, including urgent and emergent care. Faculty members from the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and other divisions have formed a multidisciplinary team to confront the challenges posed by performing this type of screening in a confidential and compassionate way in the midst of the competing demands of an acute care setting.

Providers from the Children’s Hospital Immunodeficiency Program (CHIP), which provides medical care and social support to children, adolescents, and families living with or affected by HIV, have joined forces with front-line providers in the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine to create the HIV Working Group.

Key Faculty Involved

The primary lead from the Emergency Medicine side is Dr. Amy Grover, a general pediatrician with a clinical interest in improving care for adolescent patients in the acute care setting.

Other key team members in the Section of Pediatric Emergency Medicine include

Dr. Lisa Abuogi, a global health trained general pediatrician who splits time between CHIP clinic and the Emergency Department
Dr. Julia Freeman, a pediatric emergency medicine physician with a clinical interest in adolescent medicine
Sarah Moultrie CPNP, a Clinical Practice Specialist with an interest in adolescent medicine
Irina Topoz, MD, a pediatric emergency medicine physician and Quality Improvement expert
Patrick Burchett CPNP, an emergency medicine provider who also chairs the Culture Call Back team

The primary lead for this project from the Infectious Diseases side is Dr. Christy Smith-Anderson, a pediatric infectious disease specialist whose research and clinical work focuses on preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission and the health of HIV-exposed infants and children.

Other key team members in the CHIP clinic include

Kay Kinzie, FNP, the clinical manager for the CHIP clinic
Kim Pierce, PNP, who cares for HIV-positive youth with the CHIP Youth team
Erin Hilgier, LCSW, who provides social support to families being seen in the CHIP clinic
Bernie Zarrazola, Health Navigator, who helps link newly diagnosed HIV-positive patients to care.
