Todd Ballantine is an environmental scientist specializing in natural resource conservation. His work includes wetland restoration for communities, and sustainable tourism. He led his firm, Ballantine Environmental Resources, for over 30 years in Boulder, Co and Hilton Head Island, SC. Todd is the author and illustrator of Tideland Treasure, A Naturalist's Guide to the Southeast Coast. Tideland Treasure is a 30-year top-seller for University of South Carolina Press. He was a Pulitzer Prize nominee for Environmental Writing. Todd's latest book, Birdlife, a Naturalist's Guide to the Southeast, was published in October 2022. What you may not know: Todd Ballentine is also a professional musician. His bands played with the Doors, Allman Brothers and others. In 2016, Todd was diagnosed with Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), a variant of Alzheimer's disease that primarily affects vision and visual-spatial awareness. His motto is: "The nature of nature is change". He takes that fact to heart with his diagnosis. Todd continues to write, give talks, and play his guitars every day.
