Fellowship in Health Quality Leadership

The IHQSE's Fellowship in Health Quality Leadership is a rigorous development program for individuals looking to build a career in healthcare quality leadership. With a focus on personal, professional, project and program-level development, the fellowship blends practical skill development, application, and coaching to accelerate a career in quality leadership.  Fellowship graduates are uniquely positioned to apply these skills to project-level improvements, quality program building and health leadership positions.

    Course Overview

project management, process improvement, foundational leadership principles, skills to build programs, executive coaching

The fellowship combines foundational leadership content, specific leadership skills aimed toward building and leading quality programs, and project improvement work resulting in completion of a significant quality project. Additionally, fellows will have frequent executive coaching sessions to aid their career development.

The course includes over 60 hours of content supplemented by approximately 60 hours of intensive one-on-one coaching. Theory bursts of content are delivered in short videos and live interactive virtual sessions. Every core concept that is taught is immediately applied to real-world projects with the aid of a dedicated coach to facilitate successful implementation.

Fellows will complete the IHQSE Certificate Training Program in Health Quality Transformation, the Foundations of Healthcare Leadership and a specially designed Heath Quality Leadership Program.

With a focus on performance improvement and project management, fellows will learn the core concepts of DMAIC including project planning, measurement, intervention, and sustainability.  Additional sessions will focus on building culture, motivating teams, and acquiring the change management skills necessary to lead and manage clinical process improvements. Fellows will immediately apply the content to a project of their choosing allowing for concurrent application of skills. Learn more.

With a focus on foundational principles in leadership and management the FHL program will foster the skills necessary for progressive leadership in healthcare.  Each of the core concepts will be taught then coached to ensure fellows can successfully demonstrate skills acquisition. Learn more.

With a focus on understanding, developing and implementing a quality program, graduates will be well prepared for a future role of as a leader in organizational quality. Taught by current and former health system leaders, fellows will gain the skills to prepare for a future role in health quality leadership such as a Patient Safety Officer, Director of Quality, Chief Quality Officer or Chief Medical Officer.

Access to frequent sessions with an executive coach will allow fellows the opportunity to unlock their potential as leaders.  The program offers intensive, one-on-one coaching to help leaders gain self-awareness, set and attain goals, act as a sounding board, and achieve their maximal level of performance.

      Participant Engagement

The fellowship is a rigorous professional development program. The longitudinal curriculum builds on itself and requires substantial effort. Specifically, in order to graduate fellows must:

      • Attend all course offerings.
A customized schedule will be created prior to the course to ensure completion in no more than 18 months. The goal is for fellows to graduate in less than 12 months, but we recognize in some circumstances it may take longer.

      • Attend regular live, virtual coaching sessions.
These sessions generally occur for 60 minutes and help enhance core concepts and catalyze skills development.

      • Apply curricular concepts and tools between coaching sessions.
Concepts are enhanced through application assignments, which must be completed and submitted in a timely manner.

      • Complete a substantial performance improvement project.

      • Continue your engagement with the IHQSE.
After the program, fellows will have ongoing access to the IHQSE network of faculty, coaches and past graduates. Our aim is to transform people, processes and organizations. As such, we want to celebrate your future successes (see our newsroom and performance portfolio)  as well as continue to be a resource for your development. Our fellow network is one of our biggest assets, and we hope you’ll continue to be engaged for years to come!
