For Patients

Thinking about starting treatment for opioid use? Please participate in the HOMER Study!

If your primary care clinic is participating in HOMER, you can join this national study with over 1,200 people also starting treatment.

Your participation will help future patients receive the best care!

What is HOMER about?

Your doctor will explain the process of starting treatment with buprenorphine (or Suboxone).  Treatment can start:

  1. at the clinic
  2. at home (not at clinic), with a plan that you follow
  3. with your doctor using phone calls or video contact, but not at the clinic

Patients and doctors need to learn more about how long-term treatment is influenced by how treatment begins.  The HOMER study will help clinical care teams and patients better understand which method for starting treatment with buprenorphine (Suboxone) works best based on a patient’s unique needs.

What will you be asked to do?

  • Agree to be randomly assigned (like the flip of a coin) to one of the three options to start treatment (induction).
  • Complete a 30-minute survey before you start treatment (by phone, online, or paper).
  • Complete a 20-minute survey 3 times (at 1 month, 3 months, and 9 months) after starting treatment.

What will you receive?

You will receive a $75 gift card for completing the first (before induction) and final (nine month) questionnaires, and a $50 gift card for completing the one-month and three-month questionnaires. That’s up to $250 in gift cards for your participation!
