Chair's Letter

Welcome to the Department of Dermatology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. We are an integrated department that spans the Anschutz Medical Campus, providing care at UCHealth, Children's Hospital Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center and Denver Health Medical Center. We pride ourselves on being an internationally renowned program that provides comprehensive resources for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the skin. Our mission is to lead collaborative innovation in the understanding and treatment of dermatologic disease through excellence in patient care, education, research, and community engagement.

Patient Care: Our team of award-winning, board-certified dermatologists and mid-level providers offers a wide array of dermatological services for both children and adults, providing quality patient care that includes treatment of skin cancer, inflammatory and infectious skin disorders, hair and nail disorders, and the full spectrum of complex skin diseases. Our clinical services include medical dermatology, Mohs micrographic and dermatology surgery, dermatopathology and cosmetic dermatology.

Education: Our education programs include medical students, residents, and fellows. We offer a three-year ACGME-accredited residency (up to 6 slots per year), a one-year ACGME-accredited micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology fellowship, and a one-year pediatric ACGME-accredited fellowship. The residency is an integrated program that utilizes all four clinical sites. Starting in 2025, for residents interested in research training in the context of their dermatology residency, we offer a 2+2 program with two years of traditional residency, followed by two years of research training supported by our T-32 NIH training grant. We also offer fellowships in dermatology research. Graduates of our training programs have become academic and community leaders both regionally and nationally.

Our faculty strive to discover the molecular and cellular basis of diseases affecting the skin and to apply this new knowledge to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these diseases. Research activities include investigating the molecular biology and immunology of the skin, dermato-epidemiology, genetic determinants of skin diseases including skin cancer, and development of gene therapy approaches. Our longstanding T32 funding from NIAMS has been successfully supporting the career development of physician-scientists for 35 years.

Community Engagement: We are proud to offer dermatologic care delivery at Denver Health Medical Center, Colorado's primary safety-net institution and a key site in providing care to underserved communities. In addition, our clinical site at the DAWN (Dedicated to Aurora’s Wellness and Needs) Clinic provides specialized skin care for uninsured Aurora residents. In 2025, we partnered with the Colorado Rockies to prioritize skin health through community engagement and preventative care. During a team-building event at Coors Field, distinguished faculty members—including Dr. Maryam Asgari, Dr. Whitney High, and Dr. Theresa Pacheco—conducted complimentary spot skin screenings for Rockies players and coaches. This initiative specifically aimed at the early detection of skin cancer, a critical concern in Colorado, which faces some of the highest per-capita skin cancer rates in the United States due to its high altitude and intense UV exposure. By screening professional athletes who spend significant time outdoors, the department emphasized the importance of regular skin cancer screening and proactive sun safety within the local community.

Our goal is to provide world-class clinical care in an environment where discovery informs clinical practice and education. Thank you for visiting our website and learning about us. For more information, please contact us here.
