The Physiology and Biophysics Department considers the body as a set of systems that are constantly interacting with one another. Just like you might have needed to get out of bed, wipe the sleep from your eyes and drink some coffee this morning before you were ready to open your laptop and begin reading about what’s going on at CU Anschutz, the body has a checklist of things going on at all times. Your lungs breathe in fresh oxygen (pulmonary system), your heart delivers oxygen to your muscles (cardiovascular system), and your neurons send messages from your brain throughout your body all day (nervous system) so that you can accomplish all of your many tasks. Scientists in the physiology and biophysics department investigate how all of the body’s systems work together, and look at which parts of the systems have slowed down or stopped working when there is an injury or illness.
What system interests you most? The musculoskeletal system (muscles and bones), the gastrointestinal system (stomach and intestines) or the nervous system (brain and spinal cord)? It probably depends on your favorite activity – running marathons, eating tasty snacks or reading a good book?! Reading more about the science being performed by the scientists in the physiology and biophysics department is a good start!
