Family Matters Intervention
The Family Matters Intervention uses a three-arm pragmatic study design with families of children ages 5-10 years old to increase the healthfulness of the home food environment and thereby child and family cardiovascular health. This state-of-the art mixed methods study used evidence-based intervention components including ecological momentary intervention, community health workers, motivational interviewing, and video-feedback to help families decrease momentary stress and increase the quantity and quality (diet quality, interpersonal atmosphere) of family meals. Measures being collected at baseline, 6-month and 12-month follow-up include: online surveys, anthropometrics (e.g. height, weight, neck circumference), ecological momentary assessment (EMA) or mHealth data collection via their mobile devices, location tracking, dietary recalls, and video-recorded family meals. This family-based intervention also tests whether in-home or virtual sessions produce the same or different effect in cardiovascular health outcomes in children and their family members.
