Building Connections to Specialty Care Across Rural Colorado
Sep 1, 2026For patients in rural communities, accessing specialty care can involve significant logistical and geographic barriers. Long travel distances, time away from work and family, costs and limited appointment availability can all affect a patient’s ability to receive timely specialty care.
At The Care Collaborative, we are working to reduce these barriers by expanding access to specialty expertise while supporting care within rural communities. ECHO and eConsults offer two complementary approaches, connecting rural clinicians with specialists at the CU Anschutz School of Medicine and strengthening access to specialty knowledge at the local level.
Building Local Clinical Capacity Through ECHO
The ECHO model uses virtual, case-based learning to connect rural clinicians with specialists and peers. Through ongoing education, case discussion and shared clinical expertise, participating clinicians can expand their knowledge and build greater capacity to manage complex conditions within their own practices.
This model is particularly valuable in rural settings, where access to specialty services may be limited by geography, workforce availability and other barriers. By extending specialty knowledge to local care teams, ECHO supports clinicians in providing more comprehensive care within their communities.
Expanding Access to Specialist Expertise Through eConsults
eConsults are another mechanism for extending specialty expertise to rural settings. Through the secure electronic health record, primary care and other clinicians can submit focused clinical questions to specialists and receive recommendations without requiring the patient to schedule a separate specialty appointment.
Specialist input can help clinicians clarify a diagnosis, inform a treatment plan, determine appropriate next steps or assess whether an in-person referral is necessary. An eConsult can also provide interim care advice and ensure the patient has the required lab work, imaging or other procedures to make that visit more efficient. For patients, this approach reduces unnecessary travel and improves timely access to specialty guidance. For clinicians, it is an additional resource for managing patients whose care may benefit from specialty expertise.
Strengthening Specialty Care Access in Rural Communities
ECHO and eConsults address different aspects of rural specialty care access. ECHO focuses on building clinical knowledge and capacity over time, while eConsults provide patient-specific specialist guidance at the point of care. Together, they create additional pathways for connecting rural clinicians and their patients with specialty expertise.
In-person specialty care remains essential for many patients and conditions. However, not every clinical question requires a patient to travel to a specialty center. By strengthening local clinical capacity and creating more direct connections between rural clinicians and specialists, these models can help ensure that patients receive appropriate care while allowing more care to remain close to home.
