Colorado physicians take note! Big changes are coming to CME requirements
Sep 25, 2025
With the passage of the 2024 legislation “Physician Continuing Education HB24-1153,” all physicians will soon be required to complete 30 hours of accredited CME in the 24 months prior to license renewal, reinstatement or reactivation. This will take effect beginning with the 2027 renewal cycle. Physicians must self-attest to their CME at renewal, and up to 5 percent of renewals will be audited annually. Failure to comply—without reasonable cause—may be considered unprofessional conduct.
In addition, Colorado’s Division of Professions and Occupations continues to require two hours of substance use disorder training at each renewal. Exemptions to this requirement include national board certification that requires equivalent substance use prevention training or attestation that the health-care provider does not prescribe opioids.
These changes bring Colorado into closer alignment with other states and reflect an ongoing emphasis on safe prescribing, equity in care and lifelong learning. Now is a great time for physicians to sign up for an upcoming ECHO series to obtain free CME and ensure readiness for the upcoming renewal cycles.
