University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) is a tertiary medical center, level one trauma center, and the primary teaching hospital for the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM) programs.

This site provides trainees with an opportunity to experience the full depth of complexity and acuity in vascular surgery. UCH receives transfers from at least five states encompassing a five-hundred-mile radius, making it one of the largest catchment medical areas in the country. The result is unparalleled vascular surgical training with an emphasis on forward looking treatments in complex endovascular management of vascular disease; particular strengths include complex aortic, limb salvage, thoracic outlet syndrome, carotid disease, and venous disease.

Located on the Anschutz Medical Campus, UCH serves as the primary site of training. Eight full time faculty members from CUSOM are assigned to the clinical service and are responsible for resident education and supervision. UCH’s 700 bed hospital contains state of the art facilities featuring 40 operating rooms, including a vascular surgery dedicated hybrid OR and a brand-new tower opened in 2023 with additional bed and hybrid OR capacity. At the University of Colorado Hospital, vascular surgery encompasses two well-staffed teams with an intern or APP, midlevel resident, and senior resident or fellow on each team.

The Vascular Service has two days of clinic, two full operating room day under the supervision of two full-time attendings.

RMR VA allows trainees exposure to the breadth of vascular surgery ranging from bread and butter vascular surgery cases in a community setting to complex tertiary referral vascular surgery cases. Common endovascular procedures include endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, percutaneous peripheral interventions, and transcarotid artery revascularization, in addition to open peripheral bypasses, carotid endarterectomy, and fistula creation.

The OBL as a training site is a truly unique training opportunity among academic training programs; it is a free-standing outpatient procedure center located walking distance from University Hospital. With a clear paradigm shift in healthcare towards outpatient procedure centers and ambulatory surgery centers, it is imperative for trainees to experience surgical training in an OBL setting. The CU OBL offers trainees experience in outpatient endovascular procedures – an important component of a vascular surgeon’s caseload – as well as understanding the business of healthcare and vascular surgery. The education at the OBL includes concepts of lean operations, billing and coding, supply chain, and finance education lead by the PD, who has formal business education (MBA in Health Administration).

Dr. Malgor, Dr. Wohlauer, and Dr. Jacobs provide supervision for the trainees at the OBL. Each day of the week there is a PA at the OBL providing support for trainees who participate in full procedure and clinic days. The trainees are also exposed to hands-on vascular ultrasound education as a full time registered vascular technician performing a variety of duplex studies, such as carotid/vertebral, lower and upper extremity arterial and venous, mesenteric and dialysis access ultrasound is on site.

There are 3 recovery room beds for procedures as well bedside procedure areas and an angio suite. A total of 77 procedures were performed last year, including lower and upper extremity angiograms, hemodialysis access maintenance procedures (e.g. fistulograms, declottting), venous ablations and phlebectomies (to treat varicose veins):

  • 21 venous procedures (venous ablation, phlebectomies, deep vein stents)
  • 12 dialysis access maintenance (fistulogram, declotting)
  • 44 arterial procedures (leg and arm angiograms)
