Translational Research Objectives in Foot and Ankle Injuries and Osteoarthritis: Kenneth Hunt, MD, University of Colorado Research Lab

The Kenneth Hunt, MD, University of Colorado Research Lab is dedicated to translational research in foot and ankle injuries and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Our wide-ranging research objectives encompass understanding injury mechanisms, implementing optimal management strategies, and developing disease-modifying treatments. We strive to gain a comprehensive understanding of foot and ankle injury mechanisms, prevention strategies, and effective management approaches to facilitate the safe and efficient return of athletes to their sports activities. Through our investigations, we explore various treatment modalities, rehabilitation protocols, and techniques that promote effective recovery.

In addition to injury management, we focus on understanding the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis in different joints, with a particular emphasis on post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Our in-depth investigations aim to identify the underlying mechanisms contributing to the development and progression of this condition. Furthermore, we explore the impact of obesity and other comorbid conditions on osteoarthritis, with the goal of identifying preventive measures to mitigate their effects. We also strive to develop disease-modifying treatments for osteoarthritis by investigating novel therapeutic approaches such as regenerative medicine techniques including stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Furthermore, our research extends to patient-reported outcomes research specific to elite athletes. By focusing on this population, we gain valuable insights into the unique challenges they face in terms of injury management, rehabilitation, and long-term outcomes. This understanding allows us to develop tailored interventions and optimize the care provided to elite athletes. Additionally, we engage in quality improvement research in the field of orthopedic surgery. Through evaluating current practices, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing evidence-based interventions, we strive to enhance the overall quality and safety of orthopedic surgical procedures.

Through our diverse research endeavors, the Kenneth Hunt, MD, University of Colorado Research Lab aims to advance knowledge and understanding in foot and ankle injuries, post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and related areas. Our ultimate goal is to make meaningful contributions to clinical practice, improve patient outcomes, and enhance the field of foot and ankle orthopedics.
